Gavin Newsom, the newly elected Governor of California, has already made waves with his populist stance on cannabis legalization and his support for sanctuary cities. Now he’s making headlines after winning the recall election in Sacramento by a wide margin.

California Governor Gavin Newsom addressed the results of the recall election in Sacramento on Friday.

(CBSLA) – LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) – Governor Gavin Newsom addressed the media less than an hour after the polls closed, thanking voters and said he wanted to concentrate on what Californians voted “yes” to as a state in the recall election. “We agreed to cooperate with science. We agreed to vaccinations. We agreed to put a stop to the epidemic. We say yes to people’s freedom to vote without fear of voter suppression or phony fraud. We affirmed a woman’s basic constitutional right to choose what she does with her body, fat, and future. We accepted diversity with open arms. We agreed to be included. Pluralism was welcomed with open arms. We answered yes to everything that we value as Californians and, I would say, as Americans – economic justice, social justice, racial justice, and environmental justice, to name a few. All of those things were on the ballot this evening: our principles, where California has made so much progress.”

In an especially emotional moment, the governor expressed his gratitude to the millions of Californians who used their basic right to vote and express themselves so forcefully, rejecting what he described as politics’ divisiveness, cynicism, and pessimism.

Newsom expressed concern for children, including his four children, who are growing up in a society that is more divided, where youngsters are becoming frightened, alienated, and disconnected.

“I believe we owe our children a greater feeling of respect, and it is our duty as adults to reject this false separation. As a state and a country, we have a lot more in common than we give ourselves credit for.”

During his campaign, he stated that everyone wants to be respected while going throughout the state to both red and blue districts, meeting people he knew would vote against him and those he knew would vote for him.

“Everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging to others. We all want to feel secure and protected, especially in this epidemic. Those are universal principles, according to Newsom.

The governor alluded to the previous president, referring to former President Donald J. Trump’s assertion that the California recall election was rigged.

“You don’t toss democracy around like a football,” Newsom added. “It reminds me of a – I’m not sure – antique vase. You can drop it and shatter it into a million pieces, and that’s exactly what we’re capable of if we don’t rise to the occasion and push back. You know, I’ve mentioned this a lot on the campaign trail. We may have beaten Trump, but Trumpism is still alive and well in the United States.”

Newsom brought up the “great lie,” the January 6 insurgency, and voting suppression attempts that he claims are taking on throughout the country, as well as an attack on women’s and girls’ constitutional rights.

“It’s a historic time in our country’s history, but it reminds me of something – I don’t know – someone told me a few decades ago while discussing a tough and hard situation. ‘The globe is too tiny,’ they remarked. We don’t have the time, and we don’t have enough knowledge, to achieve flimsy triumphs at the cost of others.’ Newsom went on to add, “We must all triumph together.”

His sentiments are clear, he said, in the spirit of reconciling the present situation and trying to comprehend what’s going on in California and throughout the nation.

“Tonight, I am humbled and thankful, but I am determined, in the spirit of my political idol, Robert F. Kennedy, to make the world a gentler place. Thank you everyone so much, and thank you to the 40 million Americans and Californians who voted no on the recall. “Goodnight, everyone,” said the governor.
