You might have heard the term “Fantasy Hockey Forecaster” before, but just what is it? This article will teach you everything about Fantasy hockey forecasters. What are their benefits and disadvantages to consumers. What impact has this had on the industry in general?
The “forecaster hockey” is a fantasy hockey forecaster that allows users to create their own customized game plans. The tool uses a proprietary algorithm to predict the outcome of games and it also provides information about the players’ historical performance.
Not going to lie, it seems a bit odd to be releasing a fantasy hockey forecaster that I believe will be incorrect soon after it goes live on the internet. With the way the Omicron COVID-19 variety is sweeping the league, I’m not optimistic that next week’s already-shortened schedule will be preserved. Another game was postponed on Friday morning, with the showdown between the Boston Bruins and the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday being canceled.
COVID-19 protocol lists 74 NHL players from 17 different NHL clubs as of Friday morning. Based on a 23-man roster, that’s a bit more than 10% of the league. This isn’t a fantasy epidemiology column, so I’m not going to guess on what’s next or if this is the peak, but it’s worth considering that the other shoe may be about to drop.

The NHL is presently not contemplating any type of halt, according to the ESPN NHL writing team, but as we’ve seen from this week’s COVID snowball, “now” is a highly relative phrase.
COVID management is now a part of fantasy hockey, as we discovered last season, so it doesn’t harm to speculate about how we may predict some of the worst-case situations on the horizon and search for trading possibilities.
Tampa Bay Lightning’s Nikita Kucherov and Brayden Point: The Lightning forwards aren’t in a hurry to return to the lineup, since the club has continued to dominate without them. However, both have resumed their practices, and a return to full health in January is a realistic possibility. Both have been dropped in a lot of leagues because fantasy managers are aware of what’s available, but trade offers are a real possibility. With the current schedule intact, best projections for Kucherov’s rehab suggest he’ll miss another eight games, which means you’ll be looking at guys like John Tavares, Anze Kopitar, or Chris Kreider as comparables for remaining fantasy points. If a pause or schedule modification allows Kucherov to store part of those eight games for when he’s healthy, he’ll rapidly join the ranks of Brad Marchand, Nathan MacKinnon, and Jake Guentzel.
Point follows the same principle as Kucherov, except his fantasy points per game are reduced from 2.9 to 1.9. Any games he has stored for when he is well again will increase his current worth.
Vegas Golden Knights’ Jack Eichel (C): Eichel’s current timeline sees him returning to game readiness towards the conclusion of the three-week break in February that has been set aside for the Olympics. However, according to the schedule, the Knights won’t play again until late February. It implies Eichel isn’t worth an active roster slot right now, based on cautious estimations of his fantasy productivity. Thirty-two games isn’t enough to raise his remaining potential to a level where he can compete with a lesser asset who is presently accumulating points.

However, when more games are added to his theoretically healthy window, you may begin to argue that Eichel is deserving of an active roster place now. Eichel ranks approximately 300th among skaters in remaining fantasy points if we give him a modest 2.1 fantasy points per game (FPPG) on the current schedule of 32 games after the break. But what if he does well and is given additional opportunities? Eichel jumps to roughly 150th in remaining points with 2.5 FPPG and 36 games left. And, of course, the value of the NHL slate increases with each passing day. Any type of COVID halt would make Eichel, who is available in 60% of ESPN leagues, an urgent target.
Carey G. Price, Canadiens de Montréal: We can also apply the pause concept to players like Price. Price has been out of the lineup since the start of the season due to personal and surgical rehabilitation, but he has been making little strides toward a comeback. This season, the Canadiens have been a complete disaster. But it hasn’t prevented Price in the past from putting the whole team on his back. Any games switched from Price missing to Price possibly being available for, like Eichel, only serve to reinforce his potential as a savior for the team this season.
Pittsburgh Penguins’ Evgeni Malkin (C): He’s been skating with his teammates in practice for a while now, but we still don’t know when he’ll be back. Malkin may not have the same zing as one of the greats of the previous decade or so, but 1.7 points per game (last season) with the potential for more if he gets in a rhythm is nothing to scoff at. Any type of stoppage or game shuffle that shifts games to where Malkin is healthy boosts his worth, much as the aforementioned guys on the bench. Because the game of “Pickup Malkin Chicken” has already been played out in many leagues, his availability has been reduced to 20% of ESPN leagues. However, it’s worth double-checking in yours.
Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Alec Martinez: Martinez’s consequences from a skate to the face have persisted far longer than expected. He hasn’t been seen since November 11th. I’m not going to go into the schedule arrangement debate again, but I do want to point out what Martinez represents: Last season, he was the best fantasy defender in terms of overall fantasy points and fantasy points per 60 minutes (FPP60). In the whole league, no other defender earned as much fantasy value or as much fantasy value relative to ice time. Despite this, he’s currently available in 15% of ESPN leagues.
From December 20 to December 26, the Fantasy Forecaster will be available.
Simply put, try your best to form a lineup. Thankfully, the COVID scheduling issue occurs during the league’s previously scheduled three-day break, which falls wholly inside next week’s scoring period. That should help to mitigate any negative implications of locking players into your roster and having games postponed as a result.
The Flames, Avs, and Panthers will all be on the bench next week, taking seven games off the schedule in what was already a light week.
Aside from the stopped clubs, the Bruins, Red Wings, Blackhawks, Predators, Maple Leafs, and Kraken are the only teams with just one game (the Rangers already had just one scheduled). In head-to-head leagues, it’ll be a challenging week to meet goalkeeper appearance minimums, so be prepared to micromanage when necessary (Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, anyone?).

Notes from the group
The Dallas Stars will be my first visit for marginal acquisitions if I’m aiming to win a head-to-head league this week. They’re the best three-game option that doesn’t have any games against a club with a developing COVID-19 list. The Stars will host the Wild and Jets before traveling to Chicago to face the Blackhawks. I’m starting Jamie Benn and Esa Lindell in shallower leagues when they’re available. Throughout the season, both have proven deserving of starting spots. This is also a good week to pick up John Klingberg if he’s still available. Yes, the results have been dismal, but it’s a three-game week, and Miro Heiskanen is ill and his condition is unknown.
Every night throughout the season, Barry Melrose and Linda Cohn will provide a postgame analysis and highlight program. ESPN+ is the place to be.
Notes from the players
St. Louis Blues’ Nathan Walker, C: A 27-year-old who has spent the previous eight years in the AHL doesn’t jump out at you as a must-have, particularly when he isn’t on a scoring line or gets power-play time. However, four goals and an assist in four games is difficult to disagree with. At the very least, it’s worth mentioning that the only Australian to ever play in the NHL is now on the mend, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens until the Blues’ health improves (six regular forwards currently out).
Buffalo Sabres’ Alex Tuch (W): When given the correct position in his career and opportunity with the Sabres, he’s been a fantasy asset. However, I don’t believe the team disrupts Jeff Skinner, Tage Thompson, and Victor Olofsson’s top-line connection. While Tuch may be able to join them on the advantage, I don’t believe there will be enough chance for fantasy consideration when he returns to health. Tuch, on the other hand, has been the perfect injury substitute throughout his career, so keep an eye on him.
Edmonton Oilers’ Warren Foegele (W): Alongside Zach Hyman’s status fluctuating between day-to-day and week-to-week, Foegele fills in on a line with Connor McDavid. While Hyman is out, it’s worth utilizing him.
